What Belongs in a Sitemap
Include only canonical, indexable URLs that return 200. Redirects, noindex pages, duplicates and paginated variants dilute the file and waste crawl budget. A sitemap is a recommendation of what matters, not an inventory of everything that exists.
The lastmod date should reflect genuine content changes. Setting every URL to today on each regeneration is a common automated mistake, and search engines learn to discount lastmod entirely from sites that do it.
Priority and changefreq have little practical effect on major search engines. Accurate lastmod and a clean URL list matter far more than tuning those values.
Submission and Ongoing Maintenance
A single sitemap holds up to 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed. Beyond that, split by section and reference the parts from a sitemap index, which also makes coverage problems easier to isolate.
The old ping endpoints have been retired. Submit through Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and reference the file from robots.txt so crawlers discover it independently.
Check the coverage report after submitting rather than assuming acceptance. 'Discovered but not indexed' on many URLs usually points at thin content or weak internal linking, not at a sitemap problem.
